Spirituality from L. spiritus "of breathing, of the spirit" of the "animating or vital principle in man and animals," L. spiritus "soul, courage, vigor, breath," related to spirare "to breathe". Original usage in English mainly from passages in Vulgate, where the L. word translates Greek pneuma and Hebrew ruah.

Spirituality was one of the ten areas of concern selected as focus points in 1986 for The Future Is Now World Peace Celebration as a means of organizing and initiating dialogue among the participants.

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” Albert Einstein

“The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery.” Anais Nin

“Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“The miracles of the church seem to me to rest not so much upon faces or voices or healing power coming suddenly near to us from afar off, but upon our perceptions being made finer, so that for a moment our eyes can see and our ears can hear what is there about us always.” Willa Cather (Death Comes for the Archbishop, 1927)

“The earth doesn't belong to anyone. It is the land upon which all of us are to live for many years, ploughing, reaping and destroying. You are always a guest on this earth and have the austerity of a guest. Austerity is far deeper than owning only a few things. The very word austerity has been spoilt by the monks, by the sannyasis, by the hermits. Sitting on that high hill alone in the solitude of many things, many rocks and little animals and ants, that word has no meaning.” Jiddu Krishnamurti to himself, his last journal, p. 20

“Faith is an act of a finite being who is grasped by, and turned to, the infinite.” Paul Tillich

“The foundations of a person are not in matter but in spirit.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Once spirit was God, then it became man, and now it is even becoming mob.” Friedrich Nietzsche

“No one in the world was ever you before, with your particular gifts and abilities and possibilities. It's a shame to waste those by doing what someone else has done.” Joseph Campbell

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.” Carl Gustav Jung
