Community, L. communitatus (com+munis+tatus), means 'close exchange'. The exchanges of ideas, goods and services can be based on geographic proximity, familial and ethnic ties, and/or shared interests. An individual can, and does, belong to more than one "community": we live in physical communities sharing streets, laws and customs; before virtual online communities we shared communities of gender, age, and fatih.
Intentional communities are communities formed around specific ideas and purposes: the term ashram refers to Hindu religious communities; notable intentional communities are Brook Farm, Fruitlands, the Oneida Society (NY), the Amana community (Iowa), the Shakers, and the 1871 Paris Commune; the kibbutz are associated with Israel. The word commune usually means that most resources are shared and there is little or no personal property.

The Global PathMarkers, as individuals stood out from the masses because of their capacity and courage to embody values; they are community leaders and builders on a global level for the same reason.
The Future Is Now World Peace Celebration chose community as one of ten areas of concern as a means of focusing attention on the interrelatedness of human activities that cannot be separated out from one another.
When community is your primary concern you see each of the other areas of concern as concerns shared by everyone- how do the citizens communicate through art?, understand their past and plan a future with education?, honor a healthy environment?, justly share resources?

- Intentional Community is an inclusive term for ecovillages, cohousing, residential land trusts, communes, student co-ops, urban housing cooperatives, and other projects where people strive together with a common vision.
- The Federation of Egalitarian Communities is a network of communal groups spread across North America ranging in size and emphasis from small agricultural homesteads to village-like communities to urban group houses, and sharing a set of core principles including nonviolence, egalitarianism, and participatory decision-making.
- The Well - “originally the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, provides a literate watering hole . . . widely known as the primordial ooze where the online community movement was born — where Howard Rheingold first coined the term ‘virtual community’."
- Community in History - focused on understanding and telling the story of all people as the best way for students to gain a holistic sense of the world around them.
- The Communitarian Network is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, transnational association of individuals and organization who have come togeterh to shore up the social, moral, and political environment. “Communitarianism” could be defined as a philosophy emphasizing community as shaping individuals rather than individual shaping community.
